The grounds of Arlington National Cemetery feature 142 Memorial Trees, which serve as living memorials that commemorate military units and battles, veterans, families and others who serve. Many were dedicated by U.S. presidents, visiting dignitaries or representatives from service organizations. Thirty-six are Medal of Honor trees, each a descendent of a historic tree. Arlington National Cemetery is home to an extremely diverse and significant collection of trees and landscapes. Its more than 9,600 trees include over 300 varieties and species, both native to the area and exotic. Some of the cemetery’s oldest trees, at nearly 250 years old, pre-date the first burials.
